Welcome to the Family

Welcome to the Family

I was 10 years old… My family was having a normal evening, when my parents told us kids to all go downstairs to watch TV. My siblings and I didn’t know what to expect, but we assumed my Dad had a funny video that he wanted us to see. We were surprised when he put in a home video of a little one year old child in Korea playing with her toys. I wasn’t sure what was happening until I looked at my parents and saw the tears coming down their faces, as they watched this baby who lived on the other side of the world.

My parents had been introduced to this child through their adoption agency a few weeks earlier and they had fallen in love. They had been praying for her and asking God if they were to be the ones to adopt her into their family. By the time we were seeing this video, God had clearly spoken to them and they were filled with compassion and love to rescue an orphaned little girl in need of a family.

Unfortunately, the process to complete an international adoption is extremely long and requires a lot of waiting. In this period of waiting, I saw my parent’s heart for this precious daughter that they had never met, and it was clear that she was already a part of our family. We all anxiously longed to meet her and couldn’t wait for the day she would come home!

Though this process, we saw how close adoption is to the heart of God. In fact, all those who have received His Spirit have been adopted into the family of God.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.” Romans 8:14-16

Just as my parents longed for the day to meet their adopted daughter, our God is longing for all people to come to Him and become a part of His family. God is the perfect loving Father and the greatest desire of His heart is to rescue His children who are lost. No matter what you have been through or how far you have wandered from God, He is reaching out His loving arms to you today and inviting you to be a part of His beautiful family.

2 Corinthians 1:3 says that He is ,”the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.” He pours out His love and compassion on all people. Jesus came to earth to take on the suffering and pain that was not His, so that each one of us could be a part of His family for eternity. Now, He is calling His adopted children to shine His light to a world that’s in desperate need of hope.

“The story of Scripture is the story of a Father’s love for His children. It’s the story of a Father faithfully reaching out to the children who rejected Him. It is the story of a loving God who never gives up.” Richard Stearns, Unfinished

God is longing to bring His children home and He does it through you! How will you respond to God’s heart today?
