“To discover the real you, look at what you spend time thinking about when no one is looking, when nothing is forcing you to think about anything in particular. At such moments, do your thoughts go toward God? You may want to be SEEN as a humble, unassuming person, but do you take the initiative to confess your sins before God? You wish to be PERCEIVED as a positive, cheerful person, but do you habitually thank God for everything you have and praise Him for who He is? You may SPEAK a great deal about what a “blessing” your faith is and how you “just really love the Lord,” but if you are prayerless – is that really true? If you aren’t joyful, humble and faithful in private before God, then what you want to appear to be on the outside won’t match what you truly are.” – TIM KELLER
In the quietness of the night, or the stillness of your morning commute, where does your mind go? Do you replay frustrating conversations, contemplate the meaning of life, rehearse fearful scenarios, think about how you can bring encouragement to a friend… Where does your mind wander?
The questions we ask ourselves play a huge role in who we are becoming.
Maybe you can benefit from slowing down your pace, finding some space alone with the Lord to contemplate this question.
In this day and age where we are able to have instant gratification with a quick google search, or are able to keep our minds constantly occupied by scrolling through social media with every spare, “boring” moment….the discipline and practice of prayer and being quiet or patiently wait on the Lord is rare. We take for granted this gift we have, of being invited in by our loving Heavenly Father to approach His throne “with confidence”! Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Time spent alone with your Savior allows you to experience the great exchange.
my weariness for His strength,
my weakness for His power,
my darkness for His light,
my problems for His solutions,
my burdens for His freedom,
my frustrations for His peace,
my turmoil for His calm,
my hopes for His promises,
my afflictions for His balm of comfort,
my questions for His answers,
my confusion for His knowledge,
my doubts for His assurance,
my nothingness for His awesomeness,
the temporal for the eternal, and the impossible for the possible!
So here is your challenge, friend….carve out some space alone with the Lord and answer honestly….where DOES your mind wander? We live in a fast paced world. Maybe this practice of just slowing down to contemplate if you are asking the right questions of yourself, could radically change the way you live.
The God of the universe has invited you into an intimate relationship…ask Him to reveal where you could be wasting your thoughts, and how He can redeem them to bring Him glory!
